Till the Storm of Life is Past

parting images of liminal spaces in british homes

Liminal spaces are usually jaded or dreamy interiors that feel somehow insulated from the outside world ticking by. Some people find they create a comforting sense of retreat, while others find the opposite. This series began with a photo of a wall in my Grandparents’ 1960s flat. Since I can remember, the tiled, windowless bathroom struck me with a bittersweet mix of loneliness and nostalgia.
Whilst photographing deceased estates as they re-enter the property market, I've stumbled on that same combination of dated decor and twilight interiority. It's interesting subject matter, but also a reminder that these were the spaces in which people lived out their lives, often alone, in a world of increasing social isolation. 50% of the proceeds of this project will go to Age UK.
