Liminal spaces are usually thought of as familiar, yet jaded interiors that feel somehow insulated from the outside world. Some people find they create a comforting sense of retreat, while others find the opposite. This series began with a photo of the bathroom in my Grandparents’ 1960s flat. Since I can remember, its tiled, windowless walls have struck me with a puzzling combination of loneliness and nostalgia.
Whilst photographing deceased estates re-entering the property market, I've occasionally stumbled on that same combination of dated decor and twilight interiority. It's interesting subject matter, but also a reminder that these were the spaces in which people lived out their lives, often alone in a world of increasing social isolation. 50% of the proceeds of this project will go to Age UK.
