Liminal spaces are usually thought of as familiar, yet jaded interiors that feel somehow insulated from the outside world. Some people find they create a comforting sense of retreat, while others find the opposite. This series began with a photo of the bathroom in my Grandparents’ 1960s flat. Since I can remember, its tiled, windowless walls struck me with an otherworldly mix of loneliness and nostalgia.
Whilst photographing deceased estates returning to the property market, I've sometimes stumbled on that same combination of dated decor and twilight interiority. It's interesting subject matter, but also a reminder that these were the spaces in which people lived out their lives, often alone in a world of increasing social isolation. All of the proceeds of this project will go to Age UK.
